Fast CAT

Fast CAT

Fast CAT is a timed sprint where a dog chases a moving lure in a straight line, typically 100 yards, and earns points based on speed relative to size. It’s simple and thrilling: gates open, the lure moves, and the dog launches. But the best runs still involve training and thoughtful handling. Dogs need confidence with the lure, comfort in the environment, and a clean start so they accelerate safely. Handlers need to manage excitement, keep the dog from slipping, and ensure the dog finishes the run without turning back or getting confused.

Many dogs understand the chase instantly; others need introductions that build desire without stress. A sensitive dog might prefer a calmer setup and a shorter first run. A dog with huge drive might need help learning to wait at the line without screaming or lunging. You also teach a reliable recall at the end, because the run isn’t finished until the dog is safely collected. Some teams practice “run-outs” and “run-throughs” in low-distraction spaces to teach the dog that the lure is always forward, not behind them.

Even though the course is straight, there’s still strategy. You warm up muscles before asking for a maximal sprint. You watch footing and weather. You avoid too many runs in one day for dogs that aren’t conditioned for it. You also pay attention to the dog’s style. Some dogs run with tight, efficient strides; others bound. Some drift; others laser straight. Good handlers adapt equipment and handling to support the dog: a harness that allows shoulder extension, a leash routine that keeps things calm, and a consistent reward at the end.

Fast CAT is popular because it’s accessible. You don’t need months of technical training before you can participate, and many dogs find it deeply satisfying. It’s a chance to see what your dog looks like when it is allowed to be all-in—focused, athletic, and joyful. With smart conditioning and good habits at the line and finish, it can be a safe, repeatable activity that builds confidence and gives dogs a fun job that fits their instincts.
