The Shih Tzu is believed to have originated from crossbreeding between the Tibetan breeds, such as the Lhasa Apso, and small Chinese dogs like the Pekingese. These dogs were bred to resemble the lion, an important figure in Buddhist lore.

The Shih Tzu was cherished as a royal companion in the Chinese imperial court, particularly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. These small, elegant dogs were kept as lapdogs and treated as prized treasures, living in luxury alongside Chinese emperors and their families. They were often the subjects of art, poetry, and folklore, symbolizing wealth, status, and good fortune.
